Omega-3 Dietary Intervention May Prevent Functional Losses of The Sight (amazon) (shopzilla)

Miami, FL (PRWEB) March 25, 2012

A new study by the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, suggests that supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids has resulted in a protective application against a particular toxin, commonly associated with age-related retina functional losses. Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with study, adds that while dietary intervention of Omega-3 may improve age-related retina dysfunction and some retina degenerative diseases, prophylactic supplementation of Omega-3 would also reduce the risk of developing such dysfunction or diseases, in the first place.

The study by the University of Alberta suggests that DHA Omega-3 dietary supplementation resulted in its increased retina levels for the 1-3 months, 1-6 months trials and while the 1-3 months intervention had no effects, in the 1-6 months intervention the retinal pigment epithelial cells (cell layer just outside the neurosensory retina) function was preserved and the 6-12 months trail led to maintained outer and inner retina function.

The University of Alberta study was conducted on accumulation of a constituent (A2E) of the toxin Lipofuscin, also referred to as the aging pigment and “a wear and tear indicator” for nerve cells and retina ganglion cells. Lipofuscin has been and remains a focus of aging and stress research and there is sufficient evidence to reasonably infer that Lipofuscin can also be used as a marker of oxidative stress and aging, in general. Adv Exp Med Biol. 1989;266:17-26; Discussions 27-9.

Since retina has the highest concentration of DHA Omega-3 fatty acids, many studies such as the University of Alberta study have sought to evaluate if its dietary intervention could improve or delay the onset and/or the progression of retina diseases.

It is a known fact that DHA Omega-3 fatty acids exclusively activate the signaling pathways that can promote cell survival during their early development and protects them, later, from premature death. J. Neurochem. Vol. 98, P. 1507 – Sept. 2006.

Additionally, DHA Omega-3 fatty acids are also the precursor to Docosanoids, which produce neuroprotectin D1, inhibiting premature apoptosis (cell death) and oxidative-stress-mediated pro-inflammatory gene induction. Trends in Neuroscience. 2006 May;29(5):263-71.

Moreover, according to University of Maryland Medical Center, in a study of more than 3,000 people over the age of 49, those who consumed more fish (richest source of Omeg-3) were less likely to have Age-Related Maculate Degeneration (onset) than those who ate fewer fish.

University of Maryland Medical Center further states that other studies show that eating fatty fish reduces the risk of Age-Related Maculate Degeneration “AMD” in half and consuming DHA and EPA fatty acids may even reduce the risk of developing AMD.

Last but not least, according to the Department of Opthalmology, Ottawa Hospital Eye Institute, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, their meta-analysis of eligible studies between 1995 and 2004 indicates trends in improvement of some retinitis pigmentosa outcomes with omega-3 fatty acids in higher quality studies. Can. J. Ophthalmol. 2006 Aug;41(4):481-90.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this news study, adds that while dietary intervention of Omega-3 has resulted in notable therapeutic values for the age-related retina dysfunction or retina diseases, but the results are associated with the proper duration of its supplementation. Nutri-Med Logic Corp also adds that prophylactic supplementation of Omega-3, both DHA and EPA fatty acids, have been also associated with delaying or deterring the onset of such retina age-related dysfunction and diseases.

Investigation in Metabolic Syndrome and Brain Points to Dietary Intervention of Omega-3 (amazon) (shopzilla)

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) April 11, 2012

A newly published study in the Journal of Physiology states that, in animal study, a diet high in fructose but low in Omega-3 fatty acids results in disturbance in the brain energy homeostasis, decrease in the level of a biological molecule (Sir2, responsible for cellular longevity) and a biological process (AMPK, associated with insulin resistance and diabetes). Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this study, adds that while supplementation of Omega-3 improves both aforesaid, credible evidence suggests that levels of Sir2 and the activation of AMPK would be further increased via supplementation of another important nutrient, R-Alpha Lipoic.

High (concentrated) fructose is found in many candy bars and soft drinks. Data from 1909 to 1997 relating to nutritional consumption of concentrated fructose (corn syrup) was examined and a significant correlation was found between concentrated fructose and metabolic disturbances (dyslipidemia), suggesting that high dietary intake of fructose is an important causative factor in the development of the metabolic syndrome. (1)

This recent study examined the effects of Metabolic Syndrome (high-fructose die) and brain energy homeostasis, taking into account a diet deficient Omega-3, as a potential causative factor. According to this study, when animal were fed Omega-3 there was an increase in an important biological molecule and a biological process. Those being Sir2, a highly investigated protein (proposed to prolong cellular longevity) and the activation of AMPK, a process that plays a key and fundamental role in cellular energy homeostasis and a target of many anti-diabetic agents.

While these findings expand the beneficial properties of Omega-3, Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that the relationship between another important nutrient, R-Alpha Lipoic (Lipoic Acid) and SIRT-1, mammaline equivalent of SIRT2, was recently discovered by the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, investigation cellular energy (mitochondria) in fatty liver disease. Obesity (Silver Spring). 2012 Feb 13.

The study by the University of Navarra found that Lipoic Acid stimulated SIRT-1 and increased the production of a potent anti-oxidant, ManSOD, by 60.6%.

ManSOD adjusts and/or maintains the proper level of free radical as well as offering metabolic homeostatic poise. (2)

Additionally, overwhelming number of studies have suggested (PubMed, Keyword: Lipoic Acid AMPK; most recent Diabetologia. 2012 Mar 30) that Alpha Lipoic Acid induces an improvement of insulin sensitivity through activation of AMPK, as well as reducing triglyceride accumulation in skeletal muscle.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this recent study, adds that while dietary intervention of Omega-3 offers valuable health benefits in brain energy homeostasis and metabolic syndrome, credible evidence suggests addition of R-Alpha Lipoic would amplify the results.

Bel Marra Health Reports on Recent Research: Dietary Intake of Calcium Should Be Reviewed Again After Discussions of Heightened Heart Attack Risk. (amazon) (shopzilla)

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) January 18, 2013

Bel Marra Health, who offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, is reporting on recent research that outlines how the dietary intake of calcium should be reviewed again due to the potential of side effects.

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article (, while calcium supplements are commonly prescribed to post-menopausal women at risk of osteoporosis, possible side effects do exist when taking this supplement.

As the Bel Marra Health article reads, the role of calcium has been given much attention in the past few decades, resulting in the establishment of specific guidelines for its daily requirement. For instance, in the United States, the recommended calcium intake is 1,000 milligrams each day for younger adults, whereas in Europe, 800 mg per day is the suggested daily requirement for women within the age range of 50 to 65 years of age.

According to a recent medical report, the use of calcium supplements should be again reviewed because there is a possibility that its administration may result in calcium side effects. Based on the findings of the study published in Clinical Cases in Mineral and Bone Metabolism, calcium side effects may include a higher risk of heart attack, as well as an increased susceptibility for stroke or sudden death. These findings were summarized from 26 clinical trials involving adults who were taking 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day.

The medical report also described the findings of another study involving approximately 36,282 postmenopausal women who were taking 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D per day. In this study, a higher risk for heart attack was associated with the intake of calcium supplements in combination with vitamin D. To determine whether these calcium side effects were due to the use of two dietary supplements, the study examined the incidence of heart attack in a group that was given only vitamin D or calcium. Interestingly, the study showed that taking calcium by itself was associated with a higher risk of heart attack.

Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health Dr. Victor Marchione says, The findings of the medical report have emphasized the need to assess the use of calcium as a preventive measure against osteoporosis among the elderly. Although the use of calcium may lower the risk of hip fractures and other bone injuries among older adults, it is also important to consider other calcium side effects that may also develop at a later time.

The report also pointed out that the use of calcium is now widespread across the world and this is simply based on earlier knowledge that this mineral helps in strengthening bones and teeth. However, there is also a need to examine its interactions with other components of the body, including the activities of specific tissues and cells. The report thus presented the question of whether changes in dietary patterns are sufficient in improving the amount of calcium that enters the body.

The findings of this recent medical report have expressed the need to do further research on the benefits and risks of taking calcium pills on a daily basis.

Everyday Vitamin Adds Nature Mades Odor Control Garlic Dietary Supplement to Product Shelves and Online Inventory (amazon) (shopzilla)

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) January 07, 2013

Were excited about carrying this quality garlic product said Wayne Xu, Vice President of Everyday Vitamin Nutrition LLC. Raw garlic has been used medicinally for a long time and has been shown to be an antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant and antibacterial. There is also published research that suggests that garlic may lower lipid and cholesterol levels, and be beneficial for people at risk of heart disease. This product joins our extensive inventory of quality supplements made by Nature Made.

Published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture in July 2012, the meta-analysis study looked at the results of 26 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies about garlic. The study found that garlic, when compared to control groups, was superior in reducing total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The study also found that garlic powder and aged garlic extract was more effective at lowering total cholesterol levels, and garlic oil was better at lowering triglyceride levels. Garlic did not have any statistical effect on other lipids, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). However, the investigators noted that garlic therapy may benefit those at risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Regular dietary intake of garlic can help control blood sugar, control blood cholesterol, lower blood pressure and boost the immune system of the body. Garlic also has an effect on easing digestion and lowering the risk of certain cancers, such as colon cancer, stomach cancer, and esophageal cancer. Garlic can also be used to relieve respiratory problems such as allergies, cough and other irritations of the respiratory tract. This is due to allicin’s (garlics primary sulfur ingredient) antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Another benefit of consuming raw garlic is toothache pain relief. As allicin acts as an anti-bacterial and an anesthetic, a clove of crushed garlic can be applied to the affected tooth or gum for nearly instantaneous relief.

In most cases, around 600-900mg of garlic is a suitable amount to experience the benefits of garlic. While there are no serious side effects, people who consume large quantities of garlic can experience heartburn, stomach irritation, and flatulence, or those who are allergic to the food may experience side effects.

Nature Made, a vitamin and dietary supplement manufacturer offers quality products in the areas of bone and joint, digestive, energy, heart, immune, and sleep health. The company is committed to scientific research and new product development.

Nature Mades Odor Control Garlic (1250 mg) dietary supplement is concentrated from whole garlic and does not leave an odor on the breath or skin. It joins a long line of other Nature Made products carried by Everyday Vitamin. Those products can be found here.

Dr. J G Moellendorf Offers 6 Dietary and Alternative Therapy Tips to Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s Diseases (amazon) (shopzilla)

Sturgeon Bay, WI (PRWEB) November 06, 2012

Over 5.4 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer?s disease. The incidence doubles with every 5 years beyond age 65. An additional 1.5 million people are affected by Parkinson?s, along with nearly 1 million with other dementias. Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Chiropractor and Naturopath, Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP notes that this has a huge financial cost on society for treatment and nursing home care, along with the emotional toll on the victim and his or her family. These tragic diseases threaten to bankrupt not only the family, but the nation itself.

There are many genetic and environmental risks that lead to Alzheimer?s, Parkinson?s and the other dementias, but early recognition and natural preventative measures have been shown to delay and even halt their progression. Following are 6 tips that can be used to reduce the risks of dementias based on research from the past few years.

                1) Increase vitamin D

Macrophages need to remove amyloid-? protein from the brain to avoid tau entanglement formations according to research published in the March 2012 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer?s Disease, Volume 29, Number 1. This process is dependant on an adequate supply of vitamin D. While the minimum recommended daily allotment has recently been increased to 400 IU, this should probably be increased to 1000 to 2000 IU daily to achieve this purpose.

                2) Increase omega-3 consumption

The increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids not only reduced death by strokes and heart attacks by 19% to 45%, it reduced the risk of dementia by 40 to 50% according to research published in the December 2010 issue of Nutrition Reviews, Volume 68. In addition, the May 2, 2012 edition of Neurology reports that the consumption of omega-3s reduces the production of ?-amyloid proteins of Alzheimer?s by 37%. The safest form of omega-3s is from molecularly distilled cold water fish oil as most fish have become contaminated with mercury and dioxins from pollution. Most adults need to consume 2000 to 3000 milligrams per day of combined EPA and DHA.

                3) Take a quality, food-based multi-vitamin/mineral supplement

Many vital nutrients are missing due to food processing and growing food in depleted soils. A quality supplement can help replace these lost nutrients.

                4) Keep active

There is truth in the old adage: move it or lose it. Keeping active has been shown to slow the progression of dementia. This often becomes difficult in the elderly because they ?ache all over? or ?just don?t feel good?. Chronic stress on spinal joints from poor posture and old injuries leads to chronic inflammation, which can result in arthritis. As the spinal joints become stiffer and misaligned, they can also irritate the spinal nerves, causing other problems depending on what body systems the nerves control. Spinal adjustments by a Doctor of Chiropractic can increase the spinal movement, decrease the aches and pains, and allow the nerves to work properly.

                5) Cold laser

Brain aging is related to the accumulation of inflammation, oxidative damage to the cells, reduced metabolism, and possibly mitochondrial failure. Those with Alzheimer?s show decreased levels of the enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the plasma. This causes inadequate anti-oxidant enzymatic activity to counteract the production of free radicals in the cellular mitochondria. Research has shown that Low Level Laser Therapy(cold laser) increases the production of these critical enzymes.

                6) Lose the extra weight

A study was published in Neurology on March 26, 2008 showing that central obesity (in the abdomen) during midlife increased the incidence of dementia by three times 30 years later. This dementia was independent of the increased cardiovascular and diabetes symptoms that also appeared. Obesity was defined as a caliper measurement from the front of the abdomen to the back exceeding 25 centimeters. Peripheral obesity (in the arms and legs) had no effect on the risk of dementia.
