Building Awareness of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome During PCOS Awareness Month (amazon) (shopzilla)

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 19, 2013

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects as many as 5 million women in the United States. Estimated to affect one in 10 women of childbearing age, a PCOS diagnosis is also strongly linked to obesity and diabetes, and is one of the leading causes of infertility.

PCOS is defined as the presence of cysts on the ovaries combined with the absence of ovulation. The cysts can disturb hormone cycles, causing ovulation problems and resulting in female infertility. Statistical data shows that Hispanic and Latina women appear to have a higher risk of being diagnosed with PCOS.

While the cause of PCOS is unknown, several factors place women at risk. Diagnoses such as sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and issues with insulin resistance, metabolism and glucose tolerance can increase the likelihood of a PCOS diagnosis. Nearly all of these factors can be reduced or eliminated by maintaining a healthy weight and body mass index. Morbid obesity is defined as a BMI of 40 or greater, while obesity is defined as a BMI over 30.

Dr. Laurence Jacobs of Fertility Centers of Illinois has treated patients with PCOS, and has helped many women lessen disorder symptoms and conceive. FCI also offers a reduced price PCOS screening program.

By changing lifestyle habits and making small changes to diet and exercise, women with polycystic ovarian syndrome can not only feel better, they can improve chances of conception by 10 percent, explains Dr. Jacobs.

Frequently misdiagnosed or mistaken for other medical problems, PCOS can begin in the teen years with symptoms progressing gradually. Common symptoms of PCOS include irregular or no menstrual periods, acne, obesity/weight gain/inability to lose weight, breathing problems while sleeping, depression, oily skin, infertility, skin discolorations, high cholesterol levels, elevated blood pressure, excess or abnormal hair growth and distribution, pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis, multiple ovarian cysts, and skin tags. Some women have only a few symptoms, while others have several.

Women have many options to help reduce and lessen the symptoms of PCOS. Making these healthy changes can boost fertility and reduce the prevalence of additional medical problems. As each woman is different, some recommended treatments may work for some and not others.

Physical activity and weight loss can greatly reduce several symptoms of PCOS. As little as a 5-10 percent weight loss has been shown to help restore ovulation, lower cholesterol levels and reduce diabetes risk, acne, hair growth and depression.

Dietary changes and herbal supplements can also greatly reduce symptoms and aid in weight loss. Speak with a nutritionist with experience in treating women with PCOS to develop a diet tailored to your needs.

Lastly, some find that medication such as oral contraceptives, insulin-sensitizing agents and anti-androgens can also help with PCOS symptoms. For those looking to have a family, making healthy changes and receiving help from a reproductive endocrinologist with expertise in the latest treatments can greatly improve the chances of conception.

Investigation in Metabolic Syndrome and Brain Points to Dietary Intervention of Omega-3 (amazon) (shopzilla)

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) April 11, 2012

A newly published study in the Journal of Physiology states that, in animal study, a diet high in fructose but low in Omega-3 fatty acids results in disturbance in the brain energy homeostasis, decrease in the level of a biological molecule (Sir2, responsible for cellular longevity) and a biological process (AMPK, associated with insulin resistance and diabetes). Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this study, adds that while supplementation of Omega-3 improves both aforesaid, credible evidence suggests that levels of Sir2 and the activation of AMPK would be further increased via supplementation of another important nutrient, R-Alpha Lipoic.

High (concentrated) fructose is found in many candy bars and soft drinks. Data from 1909 to 1997 relating to nutritional consumption of concentrated fructose (corn syrup) was examined and a significant correlation was found between concentrated fructose and metabolic disturbances (dyslipidemia), suggesting that high dietary intake of fructose is an important causative factor in the development of the metabolic syndrome. (1)

This recent study examined the effects of Metabolic Syndrome (high-fructose die) and brain energy homeostasis, taking into account a diet deficient Omega-3, as a potential causative factor. According to this study, when animal were fed Omega-3 there was an increase in an important biological molecule and a biological process. Those being Sir2, a highly investigated protein (proposed to prolong cellular longevity) and the activation of AMPK, a process that plays a key and fundamental role in cellular energy homeostasis and a target of many anti-diabetic agents.

While these findings expand the beneficial properties of Omega-3, Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that the relationship between another important nutrient, R-Alpha Lipoic (Lipoic Acid) and SIRT-1, mammaline equivalent of SIRT2, was recently discovered by the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, investigation cellular energy (mitochondria) in fatty liver disease. Obesity (Silver Spring). 2012 Feb 13.

The study by the University of Navarra found that Lipoic Acid stimulated SIRT-1 and increased the production of a potent anti-oxidant, ManSOD, by 60.6%.

ManSOD adjusts and/or maintains the proper level of free radical as well as offering metabolic homeostatic poise. (2)

Additionally, overwhelming number of studies have suggested (PubMed, Keyword: Lipoic Acid AMPK; most recent Diabetologia. 2012 Mar 30) that Alpha Lipoic Acid induces an improvement of insulin sensitivity through activation of AMPK, as well as reducing triglyceride accumulation in skeletal muscle.

In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp, agreeing with this recent study, adds that while dietary intervention of Omega-3 offers valuable health benefits in brain energy homeostasis and metabolic syndrome, credible evidence suggests addition of R-Alpha Lipoic would amplify the results.
